conventional vs digital impressions

What are dental impressions?

Conventional dental impressions and digital impressions are two distinct methods used in dentistry to capture the precise details of a patient's oral anatomy. Conventional impressions involve using putty-like materials to create molds of the teeth and surrounding tissues. These molds are then sent to a dental laboratory for the fabrication of restorations like crowns or bridges. However, this process can be uncomfortable for patients due to the physical presence of impression materials in the mouth, and there's a potential for inaccuracies due to distortion during the setting of the materials.

On the other hand, digital impressions employ advanced technologies such as intraoral scanners (iTero scanner) to create a 3D digital replica of the oral cavity. This method is quicker, more comfortable, and provides real-time feedback to ensure accurate data collection. Additionally, digital impressions offer enhanced storage, retrieval, and communication capabilities, as the digital files can be easily shared with dental laboratories, allowing for more efficiency.  At Monarch, we have an iTero scanner at every one of our locations.  We utilize it in most situations involving scans, such as scanning for Invisalign, Lightforce braces, retainers, study models and some appliances.

While both methods serve their purpose, digital impressions are progressively gaining popularity due to their convenience, precision, and integration with modern dental workflows.
